Community Over Competition for photographers: 3 reasons why cultivating community is better for you and your photography business

Markets are saturated in almost every industry – and the photography business is no different. We’ve talked about ways to overcome the saturated market, but I know that it can feel tricky to do so. One of the biggest hurdles that photographers face is embracing community over competition in our industry. But I’m here to tell you that embracing the community is one of the best things that you can do. Even among all of those photographers, you ARE the perfect option for someone out there! Celebrate those around you, and I promise you: the benefits will outweigh that nervousness you might feel. 

Here are 3 reasons why you should embrace community over competition in your photography business. 

1. Beauty in Collaboration!

Surrounding yourself with like-minded people is refreshing. Sometimes the best friendships or connections are when you surround yourself with others with similar interests. Building these connections can help you find someone who really understands what it’s like to be in your shoes. Maybe you’ll find a friend who can work with you, collaborate on a project with, or simply be an ear to listen. Running a business can feel isolating… but finding someone who gets it can make that feeling lessen! 

2. Celebrate Others Doing What They Love!

It’s healthy to create positive relationships in life. Celebrate others who are doing something they love. When you uplift others, you are creating a positive environment for them (and you!) to chase your dreams. There’s truly nothing like being able to celebrate achievements with those who care about you. And that support is two-fold. They’ll celebrate you, cheer you on, and support you through the big moments too! 

3.  Expand Your Referral Network!

Although markets are saturated, there are always instances that happen where you can’t take a job for one reason or another. Maybe it’s a type of session you don’t do or maybe your schedule is booked. When this happens, you want to be able to provide quality referrals to the potential client. Your clients will be so grateful to you for taking the time to make a quality referral. Take the time to connect with others so you can confidently build a referral list, not only based on the quality of work but the personality as well! It helps all of you in the long run! And the same thing will apply to you: someone will recommend you in the future when they’re unavailable too! 

It can be easy to want to lean away from community over competition, but the truth is that finding a community will make your life and work even easier! Creating positive connections is healthy, and truly beneficial for your business (and theirs too).
